Austerity Night 2023

Published 30 May 2023

On Tuesday 16 May, I had the honour of hosting my twelfth annual Austerity Night raising funds for Operation Flinders and the Salvation Army. It was a wonderful turn out of people right across the community of Dunstan, from members of Mary MacKillop College to representatives of various organisations such as the Norwood and St Peters Rotary Clubs as well as many fellow members of Parliament. With more than 75 people attending, we raised over $1100 on the night.

This event highlights to attendees the wonderful work these organisations do to support those within our community.

Operation Flinders Chief Executive David Wark spoke to those gathered about how the lives of young people are transformed through their participation in programs such as the remote outback adventure. Participants are shown their own strengths and are mentored upon their return, helping to shape young leaders of the future who otherwise would not have these opportunities to thrive.

We also heard from Major Simon Pickens of the Norwood Salvation Army about the great work they do to bring together members of the community who seek companionship, a sense of community and for those who need help when times are tough for whatever reason.

It was wonderful to have so many volunteers from the Salvation Army help to serve the soup and bread rolls on the night. I’d particularly like to thank Simon and Renee Pickens for hosting the 2023 Austerity Night at the Norwood Salvation Army meeting room once again and for making us feel so welcome.
